All Things Yogurt

Cool. Creamy. And healthy, too. Yogurt is delicious at any time of day, and the dairy aisle is filled with many types and flavors – some you may never have tried before.

Simply put, yogurt is made by fermenting milk with bacteria called live active cultures. The result is the creamy, cool and tart concoction we know as yogurt.

A good source of protein and calcium, yogurt is also high in probiotics, which come from the cultures and keep your digestive system healthy.

In your kitchen, use plain yogurt to tenderize chicken, lamb or other meat before cooking. Experiment with yogurt sauce by blending in your choice of our new Brothers Marketplace Spices & Dry Rubs , such as Garam Masala for an Indian-style veggie burger or Moroccan Spice to top your chicken.

Here is our primer on how to enjoy different types of yogurt and cook with them at home:

Greek Yogurt
One popular type of yogurt, Greek-style yogurt has been strained to remove the whey — the milky liquid that remains after yogurt sets. Greek yogurt has a richer texture, and still retains the characteristically tangy yogurt taste.

Select from popular brands, such as Fage,Chobani, and Oikos.

For tailgating, make dip with plain Greek yogurt. Stir in Italian seasoning or a mix of spices, such as chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and oregano.

Icelandic Skyr
Thick and creamy but with less sugar, traditional Icelandic skyr is made with a special type of cultures that has been around for many years. Each cup of yogurt is made with 4 times the milk of a usual cup of yogurt.

Experiment with plain skyr in your kitchen, from breakfast to dinner. Use it as an ingredient in muffins or pancakes, or stir it into oatmeal with berries. Try it in chicken salad instead of mayo. Make a thicker version of Mediterranean tzatziki sauce, with skyr, dill, lemon cucumbers and garlic, and serve with lamb.

Or enjoy it by the cup. Taste all sorts of flavors from Siggi’s, including nonfat varieties, indulgent Whole Milk Strawberry Rhubarb, and luxurious Triple Cream Lemon, Raspberry, Vanilla and Chocolate. Made with milk from grass-fed cows raised on family farms, Siggi’s is free of preservatives, free of artificial colorings and non-GMO verified.

Icelandic Provisions, offers unique flavors such as Peach Cloudberry – cloudberries offer a sweet, baked-apple taste – and Strawberry Lingonberry, which combines sweet with tart. Icelandic Provisions skyr is made using original skyr cultures that have been preserved in Iceland for hundreds of years, much like a sourdough starter would be.

The milk is heated before adding the cultures, which help transform the milk into skyr. On average, it contains more protein and 1/3 less sugar than regular yogurt.

Local Organic Yogurt
Go local with your yogurt with Stonyfield Organic, available in single serve cups or in quarts — environmentally friendly and reusable — for eating all week long and in plain for cooking.

Add a squeeze of lime to create a simple crema for Mexican dishes. Stir in cilantro, fresh lemon juice and olive oil and drizzle over spicy beef. Or use Stonyfield as the basis of your morning smoothie.

For non-dairy yogurt options, try Forager, made with cashew milk. It’s certified organic, non-GMO, kosher, free of lactose, gluten and soy, and filled with the benefits of probiotics. Try it in Strawberry, Blueberry and Vanilla. Drizzle the Strawberry flavor over oatmeal with berries or the Vanilla over pancakes.
