All Things Yogurt

Cool. Creamy. And healthy, too. Yogurt is delicious at any time of day, and the dairy aisle is filled with many types and flavors – some you may never have tried before.

Simply put, yogurt is made by fermenting milk with bacteria called live active cultures. The result is the creamy, cool and tart concoction we know as yogurt.

A good source of protein and calcium, yogurt is also high in probiotics, which come from the cultures and keep your digestive system healthy.

Greek Yogurt
One popular type of yogurt, Greek-style yogurt has been strained to remove the whey — the milky liquid that remains after yogurt sets. Greek yogurt has a richer texture, and still retains the characteristically tangy yogurt taste.

Select from popular brands, such as Fage,Chobani, and Oikos.

For tailgating, make dip with plain Greek yogurt. Stir in Italian seasoning or a mix of spices, such as chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and oregano.

Icelandic Skyr
Thick and creamy but with less sugar, traditional Icelandic skyr is made with a special type of cultures that has been around for many years. Each cup of yogurt is made with 4 times the milk of a usual cup of yogurt.

Experiment with plain skyr in your kitchen, from breakfast to dinner. Use it as an ingredient in muffins or pancakes, or stir it into oatmeal with berries. Try it in chicken salad instead of mayo. Make a thicker version of Mediterranean tzatziki sauce, with skyr, dill, lemon cucumbers and garlic, and serve with lamb.
